Our Story

We are a group of students from Methodist College Kuala Lumpur (MCKL) battling political illiteracy amongst the youths of Malaysia. We began this mission in September of 2021 as part of our Service Learning project. Political illiteracy has long been a problem in Malaysia. One of the main reasons for this is that politics is not taught in schools. Sure, we are introduced briefly into our political system through History in Form 5 but students are never taught how to analyze politics or form their own political opinions. Moreover, there seems to be a stigma against talking about politics and youths are often discouraged to take part in political activities. Instead, most parents believe that their children should only focus on their studies. With the UNDI-18 movement successfully advocating the lowering of the voting age from 21 to 18, it is important now more than ever that youths learn about politics so they can be involved in our country's democracy and make informed decisions during the election.  Hence, we here at Wakeuplah plan to educate the youth about politics and increase political awareness among them so they can make the right decisions and build towards a brighter future.
